i started writing this album in 2023.
i was going to university.
figuring out who i was.
making mistakes.
meeting people.
losing people.
and figuring out what i wanted out of life.
at the time, i was writing songs under the name "loljack"
i was actually writing and recording two albums simultaneously.
the first album was titled Desert
the second album was titled DEADRICHPRETTY
desert was a much younger and softer side of me. r&b, slower records, a bunch of different producers, different emotions. deadrichpretty was something else entirely.
it was louder. more reckless. more confident. sometimes arrogant. sometimes completely lost. i think i was trying to prove something to myself and the people around me.

01. chemicals
this was one of the first songs i made for the album. i always knew it was going to be the intro, even before i knew what the album was going to be called. i was happy when i made this. genuinely happy. super in love.

that's where the story starts. everything felt good. everything was exciting. i didn't know where any of it was going.
02. used too
i came up with the wordplay for this song in my notes app and recorded it over a beat produced by jissa, who has production credits on 23 out of 24 songs on this album and went absolutely crazy. this couldn't have happened without you + chrxme. shoutout them for real.

i'll admit that if i lose you, i'll be breaking hearts like i used to
it's also a nod to a really old song i had on soundcloud with the same name. this one came pretty early in the album's creation. i think it's an important part of the story because it's about how transactional love can become. sometimes people hurt each other without even realizing what they're doing. around this time, i had already found what would eventually become the album cover. my mom actually took the pictures for both albums on the same trip. we were out in the Mojave Desert one day, and the next day we were taking pictures for the cover of DEADRICHPRETTY on the beach. two completely different worlds, captured almost simultaneously. kind of like the albums themselves.
